Retouched photos a thing of the past?

In France, from 1 October, any commercial photography containing models whose body shapes have been retouched to look thinner or thicker must be labelled as retouched photography.  Any photos that do not comply with the new law will be subject to a fine of at least €37 500. In 2015, France also passed a law stating that any model working in France must provide a doctor’s note confirming that the model is a healthy size and weight. Spain, Israel and Italy have similar rules.  Freelance photographers, what do you think?

Statement from Getty Images on Updated Creative Stills Submission Guidelines

From 1^st October 2017 French law requires that businesses must disclose when using images commercially, where the model’s body shape or contour has been altered to make it appear thinner or larger. In line with the new law, Getty Images has announced to its global contributor base of over 200,000 photographers that it will no longer accept creative (stock) images where a model’s body shape or contour has been retouched. This is an industry first and is an important step for Getty Images and authentic visual representation globally.

Imagery in the media has a direct impact on society, on women’s body image, fighting stereotypes, creating tolerance, and empowering communities to feel represented.  That’s why over the last several years, Getty Images has led the visual industry in the creation and promotion of powerful, relevant imagery which celebrates diversity and authenticity. The company has made a concerted effort to change the way women and other marginalized communities are represented in media and advertising and has been joined in this effort by image partners including Sheryl Sandberg’s LeanIn.org, Refinery29, MuslimGirl and Jaguar Land Rover.
